Birdie Maxine Skaggs, age 75, of Nashville, Tennessee passed away unexpectedly on April 11th, 2024.
Birdie was born in Logan, West Virginia on August 1, 1948, daughter of the late Ed and Ruth Frye.
She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Jerry Lee Skaggs; their sons, Jerry Allen (Melissa) and Joseph Lee (Crystal); grandchildren, Ava Skaggs, Charlotte Skaggs, Jayden Skaggs, Jayce Skaggs; as well as sisters, Ann Kiser, Angelia Frye, Charlotte Brauer (Jeff) and Kimberly Dean; and brother Eddie Frye. She also is survived by brother-in-law, Jimmy Skaggs (Norene), Billy Skaggs (Diane); nieces and nephews, Donna Kiser Salmons (Ronnie), Sandi Kiser Griffith (Ric), Cheryl Frye Grant (Robbie), Amy Looney Bollman (Travis), Bret Looney (Mallory), Michael Frye (Whitney), Jennifer Frye Gwilliams (Tyler), and Melissa Frye Allen (Nic), Nathan Dean, Kristi Riley (Mike), Whitney Skaggs, William Skaggs, Caitlin Skaggs; and great nieces and nephews, Meagan Grant Kiesel, Madison Grant, Easton Looney, and Grayson Looney, Colton Looney, Bryson Looney, Mila Gwilliams, Julia Frye, Axel Kiesel.
She is preceded in death by brothers, Gib Frye, Bill Frye, and Allen Frye; brother-in-law, Doug Kiser; sister-in-law, Joann Adams Frye; father-in-law, Jay Skaggs; and mother-in-law, Reba Skaggs.
Birdie worked as a customer service trainer at the corporate offices of Harris-Teeter Supermarkets in South Carolina before moving to Nashville and transferring as the Harris-Teeter trainer for Brentwood, Tennessee. Shortly after the arrival of her grandchildren she retired to spend time spoiling them.
Birdie loved writing letters. She was also a voracious reader, often finishing three or four books in a single week. Birdie and Jerry enjoyed camping in many different locations. They especially loved sharing these trips with family members and friends. They were avid supporters of their two boys’ endeavors in sports while growing up. Birdie could often be heard cheering them on regardless of if it were baseball, football, track, or any other sport they participated in.
Birdie’s favorite place was the beach listening to the sound of the surf. Birdie devoted her life to family. She loved to shop for gifts for others and was overjoyed watching the children’s eyes light up with a special surprise. On special occasions, Birdie’s home would be where everyone would gather to laugh, play games, and socialize. These events were always topped off with the biggest spread of food you could ever imagine. She loved making memories, and it was one of her many talents.
In the most recent years, Birdie’s health declined, and it saddened her, and all of us, that she was not able to host, or attend, family gatherings. We missed her at these events, but she was always with us in spirit. While loving all her family, Birdie held a special relationship with her older sister, Ann. Their connection was one for the record books filled with inspiration, loyalty, and love for each other.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 3401 Mallory Ln Ste 100, Franklin, TN 37067 in memory of Birdie Skaggs.
Visitation will be 1:00 – 2:00 PM, April 16 at Hendersonville Memory Gardens located at 353 East Main St, Hendersonville, TN 37075 with funeral services following at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow the service at Hendersonville Memory Gardens. https://www.hendersonvillefh.com
