May 31, 2024 – A suspect in last weekend’s deadly shooting of a Nashville man has been arrested.

On Sunday, police say Christopher Sayne Brooks, 32, was shot near the intersection of Lewis and Winfrey Streets in the Napier community.

After reviewing area surveillance cameras, Homicide Unit detectives believe the Brooks was walking along Lewis Street with a pistol in his hand when he had a verbal exchange with another person. Police say gunfire erupted between the two and Brooks was struck. He then fled along Lewis Street before collapsing. He tossed his gun over a fence onto Metro Water Department property.

Calvin W. Kinzer, 45, was taken into custody this week by Specialized Investigations Division TITANS detectives at a Lebanon Pike convenience market. Police say he was carrying one gun and there was a second gun in his car.

During an interview with Homicide Unit detectives at police headquarters, Kinzer admitted to shooting the man on Sunday, claiming that he did so in defense of himself and others after the man fired first.

Brooks’s gun was recovered Sunday afternoon.

Kinzer is being booked on the parole violation warrant and new charges of gun possession by a convicted felon.

The fatal shooting investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office upon its conclusion.
