On October 22, 1939, God blessed the world with the birth of Virginia Sue Brown to the late Vandeleer Brown, Sr. and Mattie Lee Brown. Affectionately known as “Sue B,” she made a profound and lasting impact on all who knew her, especially her beloved family.
Sue B accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age at First Baptist Church, South Inglewood. She journeyed boldly through life with unwavering faith, confident that God walked beside her and carried her through life’s many challenges. “God knows my heart” and “God is watching over you” were among the reassuring words she often shared with family and friends.
A proud graduate of Haynes High School, Class of 1956, Sue B continued her education at Tennessee State A & I University. She later served faithfully as a psychiatric technician at the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute for more than 30 years. She was especially known for her stern but gentle spirit and compassionate care, always treating patients with dignity and respect.
Sue B’s love for her family was demonstrated not just in words, but through countless sacrifices. Her legacy is one of unwavering support and devotion. If you were sick, she was there to comfort and mend; if you were hurting, she offered healing; and if you were celebrating, she was there to cheer you on. A remarkable matriarch, she consistently thanked God for her family and friends, often sharing encouraging morning and evening messages filled with love and faith.
She was a strong-willed and determined child of God, whose life was marked by tireless love and service to others. She served with grace—and with style. Known for her impeccable fashion sense, especially her beautiful hats, she took great pride in her appearance, seeing it as an expression of dignity, confidence, and joy.
In addition to her parents, Sue B was preceded in death by her sister, Minnie Ruth Brown, and her brother, Steven Brown. She leaves to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy her children, Kathy Palmer McCullus (Byron) of Nashville, TN, and Eric Johnson (Marcia) of Charlottesville, VA; her siblings Peggie Brown of Willoughby, OH; Vandeleer “Ty” Brown (Janet) of Nashville, TN; and William “Bird” Brown (Marshalene) of Nashville, TN; nine grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two devoted friends, Pat Barnes and Gwen Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of thy Lord.”
