Ms. Sue Shoemake Duke age 82 of the Elmwood Community died at 8:24 a.m. Monday morning September 23, 2024 with her family present. She was pronounced deceased at 9:15 a.m. by Highpoint Hospice who had been assisting the family for only a week after Mrs. Duke was diagnosed with cancer.
A memorial celebration of life will be held on Thursday afternoon September 26th at 1 p.m. from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Eld. Mike Bennett and Eld. J. D. Driver will officiate and there will be a private burial at the New Macedonia Cemetery in the Pea Ridge Community.
The family will receive friends only on Thursday September 26th from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. celebration of life at Sanderson in Carthage.
She was the sixth of eight children, four daughters and four sons and was the last surviving of the eight children born to the late Abe King Shoemake who died February 23, 1980 and Willie Maud Birdwell Shoemake who died June 8, 2003 at the age of 88 and was born Ada Sue Shoemake in the Chestnut Mound Community on April 26, 1942.
The seven siblings preceding her in death were three sisters, Linda Eulene Shoemake Huddleston who died November 13, 2010 at the age of 67, Barbara June Shoemake Hackett Brown who died May 25, 2011 at the age of 63, Rozell Shoemake Driver who died December 18, 2018 at the age of 81 and four brothers, Larry Shoemake who died as an infant, Harold King Shoemake who died February 26, 1972 at the age of 33, Charles Layton Shoemake who died July 14, 1992 at the age of 59, Gerald Silas Shoemake who died April 15, 2016 at the age of 80.
Ms. Duke was saved at an early age and was baptized into the full fellowship of the New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.
She retired from the William L. Bonnell Company in Gordonsville with nineteen years of service and where she was a member of the anodizing department team.
Surviving is her daughter, Tina Maggart of the Elmwood Community; son, Mike Maggart of Carthage; six grandchildren, Justin Maggart and wife Devan of Carthage, Dustin Angel and wife Sage of the Elmwood Community, Stephanie Duff and husband Kevin of the Riddleton Community, Colby Gann and wife Kaylee of Gainesboro, Kaylee Gann of the Elmwood Community, and Izabella Maggart of Carthage; nine great-grandchildren.
