Stephen “Steve” Robinson Wherry passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, at the age of 87.
He was preceded in death by his parents John M. (Mildred) Wherry and mother Alice Rhea.
Born in Nashville on May 24, 1937, he lived a life marked by his love of family, friends, and Nashville Real Estate. He got started on the property management basics of his real estate career early in life, shoveling cinders from neighborhood furnaces and mowing nearby yards.
He attended Montgomery Bell Academy, Hillsboro High School, and the University of Tennessee.
He came home from Knoxville determined to make his mark on the Nashville Real Estate Community. He started with commercial deals that included the Twin Airways Plaza and a Crutchfield Avenue industrial project. Later in his career, he shifted his focus to developing and selling residential projects, contributing to the development of Derby Glen, Brighton Close, Glendale Gardens, Tusculum Townhomes, West End Circle, and countless other communities. His vision and passion for real estate will be remembered for generations to come.
He loved sailing. Steve raced his Northstar 26 on Percy Priest for years and was a longtime member of the Percy Priest Yacht Club. His love of sailing took his best friend, Annie, and him on many sailing trips in the Northeast.
Steve loved a good party, particularly those with his 2 “boys” Stuart and Wendell and their friends. They fondly gave him the nickname of “Smokes,” which he took to like a duck to water. Smokes became something of a legend among that generation, never missing a bachelor party, sporting event, birthday party, or any other cause for celebration.
He is survived by his longtime companion Ann Harmer and her sons Stuart Harmer of Jay, New York, and Wendell (Wiff) Harmer. He is also survived by Ann’s 4 grandchildren Marley, Brayden, Dudley, and Wyatt.
Additionally, he is survived by his three half-sisters, Margaret Elliot, Alyce Wherry, and Mary Louise Hopkins.
He was lovingly cared for recently by the wonderful people from the Perfect Companion of Nashville.
A service will be held at Noon on Wednesday the 19th of February at Westminster Presbyterian Church, preceded by a visitation at 11. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/nashville-tn
