OBITUARY: Robert Sherman “Skip” Brown

Robert Sherman “Skip” Brown was born on January 23, 1950 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was the son of Sherman Brown, Jr. and Nelle Trousdale Brown. He passed away on February 4, 2022, at his home in Nashville, Tennessee.

He grew up in Columbia in Riverside. He graduated from Columbia Central High School in 1968. He earned a B.S. in Psychology from Lambuth College in 1973. In 1975 he earned an M.A. in Psychology at Memphis State University. In 1984 he completed an M.A. from Northwest Texas University in Occupational Therapy.

He was hired by Vanderbilt University Hospital in 1984 as an Occupational Therapist and worked at Vanderbilt University Hospital until his retirement in 2011. It was at Vanderbilt that he met the love of his life, Cindy. It was the best day and led to the other love of his life, Carolyn.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Matlock Brown, and his daughter, Carolyn Matlock. He is also survived by his brother Tony Brown (Debbie), his niece, Elizabeth Brown, and nephews, Wesley Brown (Rachel) and Matthew Brown (Miranda).

A celebration of Life and Remembrance will be held at Riverside United Methodist Church in Columbia, Tennessee, on February 27, 2022. Visitation with the family will begin at 2 pm and the service of remembrance will begin at 3 pm.

Skip was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church until he left for college. It was at Riverside that a life long faith in God and Christian compassion was formed by his church family that would shape the remainder of his life.

His daughter, Carolyn, wrote the following reflection on her dad:

Skip lived a full and wonderful life making tons of friends and memories along the way. If you knew him, then you knew his love of cheeseburgers, Key West, Colorado, and skiing. He loved his home and always opened it to family, friends, and puppies, whether he knew you or not. He was a vivid storyteller, lover of all animals, held endless compassion towards others, and loved so incredibly deeply. Above everything though, he was the best husband and girl dad. He was so unbelievably loved and everyone’s life that he touched will forever have a piece missing. Although we have to start a new chapter without our Skip, every life that he touched will move forward living by and showing others the compassion and love that Skip taught and showed all of us. May he rest in eternal peace in his heavenly home.
