Mary Jane Ray Shelton, age 89, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023.

Preceded in death by husband of 60 years, Rev. Roger Shelton.

Survived by children, Dr. Mark Wayne Shelton (Angie), Dr. Mike Ray Shelton (Kimberly), Marya Jane Shelton Allen (Robert); grandchildren, Raychel Jane (Darius Robertson) Shelton, Mary Rebecca Shelton, Andrew Roger (Jennifer) Shelton, Nathan Ray (Katie) Shelton, Daniel Denison (Judy) Shelton, Madeline Grace Allen, Makenzie Leigh Allen and fiancée, Preston Palmer; great-grandchildren, William Roger, Hannah Marie, Peter Wayne, Wesley Thomas and Royce James Shelton; sisters, Catherine Ray Boswell and Ann Ray Bryan; sister-in-law, Mary Lyda Shelton.

Jane will be remembered for many things:

Supportive Pastor’s Wife – From the time of their marriage in 1954 she supported her husband Roger Shelton in his calling as the Pastor of several churches, especially Haywood Hills Baptist Church of Nashville.

Outstanding Mother – She poured her life into raising her 3 children and encouraging them in their lives. She found great joy in seeing them succeed and be happy.

Terrific Grandmother and Great-Grandmother – She was known as “Grandmom” to her 7 grandchildren (whom she called the “Perfect 7”) and 5 great-grandchildren. They have been the lights of her life and she was very proud of all of them. She spoke of them all the time and wanted very much for them to be happy.

Sunday School Teacher – She taught many classes over the years, but the one she is probably most remembered for was as teacher of the newly-married young ladies of Haywood Hills Baptist Church. The ladies of that class still hold her in high regard and many credit her with helping them lay a good foundation for happy family life.

Secretary at Overton High School – She served the school in various ways for over 20 years. She enjoyed her time at the school and the many people she encountered there.

Great Cook – She was an amazing cook. Her chicken, roast beef, yeast rolls, pumpkin pies, and fudge pies will be missed. The family will always be thankful for her homemade chocolate chip cookies also.

Kind and Gracious Spirit – She wanted the best for everyone. Many regard her as one of the most gracious people they have ever met.

Christian Faith – She was a fine Christian in her own right while also being the wife of a Pastor. She lived her faith consistently every day. She raised her children to love the Lord and treasure God’s Word and the church.

The world is a better place because she lived in it. And Heaven will be sweeter because she is there.
