She was known for her affectionate smile and contagious laugh—two things that could soften a room and make people feel instantly welcome. Her life was marked by kindness, joy, and an unshakeable bond with her husband, family, and many friends. She truly never met a stranger. Her presence conveyed warmth and created connection everywhere she went. Her memory will remain deeply woven into the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She had a gift for turning ordinary moments into something absolutely memorable. Whether it was a kind word, a shared meal, or a quick laugh, she made life feel lighter just by being in it.

Early Life and Faith

Born on March 28, 1952, in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, she was the second child of the late Lucy Nelson. She was educated in St. Mary’s County Public Schools and graduated from Chopticon High School in 1970, where she formed lifelong friendships and held her classmates close to her heart.

She attended Morgan State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in English and Business in 1974. It was there she met and married the love of her life, Donald Chandler. She also became a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and recently celebrated a meaningful milestone with her chapter.

Her professional journey began at Random House Publishing Company. Later, she worked at Vanderbilt University, where she left her mark by becoming the first African American woman department head—an accomplishment that reflected both her excellence and her quiet strength.

She was also a true entrepreneur. She and Donald were a business and life partnership as the proud owners of Showplace Cleaning Service. She served as an Independent Organizer as well, guided by her motto, “helping others live a healthier life,” through health-focused home products. She especially loved healthy cooking with Princess House products. From successful vendor events to conferences, trips, and lively content creation, she poured her heart into what she did. She wasn’t just involved—she was devoted.

From an early age, her life was grounded in faith. She attended Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church, her family’s home church, where her spiritual foundation was nurtured within a loving community. As a young adult, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Antioch, Tennessee. Her faith remained a steady and comforting presence throughout her life.

Life Rooted in Love and Joy

She was known for her kind heart, passionate nature, and warm spirit. She was surrounded by unwavering love and support—a testament to the deep bonds she built over a lifetime. She found joy in traveling, visiting family and friends near and far, and making ordinary moments feel special. She also had a gift for entertaining—loving to cook, share recipes, and feed people in the way only love can.

Family Traditions and Treasured Moments

One of her greatest joys was traveling the world with her husband, “Mr. Don”, as she affectionately called him. She also cherished family gatherings and treasured the moments of celebrating birthdays and holidays—complete with special décor, heartfelt details, and dishes that made everyone feel at home. She took great pride in learning about her family history and sharing her lineage with relatives who didn’t yet know the stories.

She embraced life fully—one moment, one memory, one connection at a time.
