The Author of the Ages begins the chapter of Irene Gwendolyn Patton’s life on July 31, 1926. Gwendolyn was the second daughter of James C. and Lucille Patton; the sister of Aretha, Travania, Ruth, and Trilby; the aunt of Sonya; and the great aunt for Erroll Coleman and Anthony Vaughn.
Accepting Christ as her personal Savior at an early age, Gwendolyn was baptized at the Meharry Blvd Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1940. She quickly became involved as a quiet worker in the Lord’s Vineyard. She always donated funds, clothing, and meals to those in need. She often worked with Martha Hardin on various projects for the church. In addition, Gwendolyn and her sisters would work with the Stadaker sisters to provide a Christmas dinner and gifts to men who were participating in the Room at the Inn program, which was under the direction of the late Elder Alvin Bass every Christmas Tuesday.
After receiving her education in the Nashville Public Schools, Gwendolyn graduated from the historic Pearl High School. She also attended Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial School for a short while.
With a natural ability in health care, Gwendolyn’s work experience began in 1950 in the Physical Therapy Department at Riverside Sanitarium and Hospital. When the hospital closed in 1983, Gwendolyn retired after 33 years of dedicated service. During her years at Riverside, Gwendolyn acquired many lasting friendships, which she cherished. She continued her work with the sick and elderly for many years after her retirement.
Gwendolyn’s hobbies included sewing, cooking and watching 3ABN. She was a member of the Hillcrest Times Newsletter staff. She provided healthy recipes for the newsletter on a monthly basis. Members found her recipes inexpensive, healthy, delicious, and easy to prepare. In addition, Gwendolyn loved her pets. She adored her dogs, Schnitzel and Fritz. She was crazy about her cat, “Girly, Girl”. But, Gwendolyn loved her sister, Trilby, and cherished her niece, Sonya and her great nephews Erroll and Anthony, who referred to their aunt as “Mimi”.
Gwendolyn was preceded in death by her parents James C. and Lucille Patton; her sister’s Travania Patton, Marion Aretha Franklin, and Ruth E. Patton.
And now, as the Creator of Grace and Mercy brings closure to Gwendolyn’s Story of Life, He remembers those who are left to hold close the memories of Gwendolyn; devoted sister~Trilby D. Patton; niece~Sonya Franklin-Thompson; great nephews~Erroll Coleman and Anthony Vaughn from Maplewood, New Jersey; devoted cousins~Bill Allen and Shireece Firoul, Janet and William “Corky” Bell; dear friends~B. Howard Vanlier, Sallie Lowe, Gwendolyn Brown, Ruby Bass, Angela Carter, and the Stadaker family; and a host of cousins, and friends.
Gwendolyn found it, so sweet to trust in Jesus. She took Him at His word. She is now resting upon His Promise.
