Edward M. Hodgens, aged 81, passed away peacefully at home on September 28, 2024, in Nashville, Tennessee.
Born on October 4, 1942, in Farmington, Michigan, Ed lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and a deep commitment to his family and community. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandpa, and friend.
Ed grew up in Oakland County, Michigan and graduated from Pinckney High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda Newlin, and they raised a family of three in South Lyon, Michigan. Ed was committed to his family and enjoyed staying connected to both his and Linda’s extended family members through frequent gatherings, holiday celebrations and vacations.
Ed spent most of his working life at Sun Steel Treating in South Lyon. Outside of work, he was deeply involved in his local community, serving many years as a volunteer fireman, a role that reflected his selflessness and dedication to helping others. He was also committed to his church communities of Brighton Church of Christ and later Brentwood Hills Church of Christ, developing many lifelong friendships.
He was known for his love of hunting, boating, motorcycling and working on his 1929 Model A Ford. Alongside his father, he built the family home where he and Linda raised their children—a testament to his hands-on skills and creativity. Ed always looked to help others, be it assisting stranded drivers or patrolling icy roads on his snowmobile while looking for cars trapped in snowbanks. If there was anything that Ed could fix for a neighbor, friend, family member or stranger, he would. Hot water heaters, clothes dryers, cars, paving driveways – you name it.
Despite suffering from severe back pain in his later years, Ed maintained his joyful spirit. When he could no longer assist someone through physical labor, he would help in other ways, including cooking. He was famous for sharing his potato salad, chicken soup and chili with family, friends and others in need.
Ed is lovingly remembered by his three children, Terri (Brad) Weaver, Keith (Kathy) Hodgens, and Kenna (Mark) French; six grandchildren, Keith (Emma) Hodgens, Taylor Riley, Trevor Riley, Kurtis Hodgens, Olivia French and Walker French; and his sister, Anselee Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Linda Newlin Hodgens; sister, Dixie Russell; and parents, Bessie and Ansel Hodgens.
