Mrs. Edna Dickens of the Dixon Springs Community died eleven days before her 90th birthday, peacefully at 5:28 p.m. Saturday afternoon June 14, 2025 surrounded by her family at the Hartsville Convalescent Center. She was pronounced deceased at 6:15 p.m. by Gentiva Hospice of Lebanon.
Her grandson, Bro. Stetson Hall and Eld. Jeff Blackwell will officiate at the 1 p.m. Monday afternoon June 16th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow beside her husband in the Dias section of the Dixon Springs Cemetery.
The Dickens family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Sunday June 15th from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Monday from 10 a.m. until the 1 p.m. services.
Born Edna Mae Wallace in the Monoville Community on June 25, 1935 as a twin, she was the daughter of the late Buford Stanton Wallace who died April 23, 1960 at 51 and Bertie Lorene Sexton Wallace who died July 6, 2000 at the age of 88.
Four siblings preceded her in death, Harrison Wallace who died September 11, 1986 at the age of 53, Sue Wallace Thompson who died February 17, 2018 at the age of 71, Elma Dean Wallace Martin who died October 30, 2020 at the age of 82 and Clyde Wallace who died April 25, 2023 at the age of 91.
Mrs. Dickens was united in marriage on May 30, 1953 to Korean War veteran and lifelong Dixon Springs Community farmer, James Chesley Dickens, who preceded her in death on May 30, 1953 at the age of 87. They were married in Carthage at the Smith County Courthouse by then Smith County Court Clerk, Leonard Harville.
Mrs. Dickens sadly lost two of her children prior to her passing, Phillip Anthony (Dobie) Dickens who died as a result of cancer on September 9, 2015 at the age of 55 and a daughter, Vickey Dee Dickens Driver who died from heart complications at the age of 58 on April 8, 2023.
Mrs. Dickens was saved at the age of 12 in 1947 at the Peton Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She transferred her membership by letter to the Bide Russell Missionary Baptist Church in the Riddleton Community where she remained a member until her death.
Mrs. Dickens was a recipient of her General Education Degree and for fourteen years, from 1984 through the 1998 school year was a member of the kitchen staff.
Mrs. Dickens was a delightful cook and to her surviving children and family; death is a way of saying “Your table is ready”.
Survivors include her two surviving children, Stanley K. Dickens and wife Teresa of Hartsville, Candice Dickens Hall and husband Rick also of Hartsville; daughter-in-law, Janet Driver Dickens of the Tanglewood Community; son-in law, Eld. Jerry Driver of the Pea Ridge Community; twin sister, Faye Blackwell of the Dixon Springs Community; brother-in-law, Gordon Thompson of Woodbury; eight grandchildren, J. D. Driver and wife Nikki of the Chestnut Mound Community, Mitchell Dickens and fiancée Jennifer Wilburn of the Riddleton Community, Richard Driver and fiancée Sara Vantrease of the Grant Community, Amanda Hicks and husband Chris of Carthage, Carrie Wright and husband Adam also of Carthage, Holly Harper and husband Nick of Hartsville, Stetson Hall of the Dixon Springs Community, Lyndsey Linville and husband D. J. of Hartsville; thirteen great-grandchildren.
The Dickens family has requested memorials to the Trousdale County Help Center.
