Betty Rose Matthews, 71, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2026.

Born on December 3, 1954, Betty was the daughter of the late Jesse E. Martin and Martha V. Leaver. She lived a life marked by kindness, faith, and a love for learning.

Betty earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Vanderbilt University before continuing her studies and receiving her Master’s Degree in Education from Middle Tennessee State University. Throughout her career and life, she was passionate about education and helping others.

She was a faithful member of Owen Chapel Church of Christ in Brentwood, where her faith remained an important part of her life. Betty found joy in reading, hiking, and traveling with her beloved husband, Larry. Whether exploring new places or spending quiet time with a good book, she appreciated life’s simple blessings and treasured the memories she created with those she loved.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Larry Matthews; her brother, Larry Martin (Lynn); her nephew, Grant Martin (Summer) and their children, Ellie, Ben, Miles, and Brock Martin; her niece, Melissa Burton (Walt) and their children, Liam, Jeb, and Libby Burton; her nephew, Seth Martin (Kara) and their children, Jack and Ella Martin; along with extended family and dear friends who will miss her greatly.

Betty will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, dedication to education, and the love she shared with her family and friends. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched.
