Betty Jo Black, age 88, of Nashville, passed away at her home with her family on Saturday, February 11, 2023.
She was born on September 19, 1934, in the Flewellyn Community of Robertson County to the late Harvey Gilbert and Clara Elizabeth (Stultz) Carter.
She graduated from Jo Byrns High School in 1952 and married Jewell Mathis Black, the love of her life, on January 16, 1954. They moved to Nashville in 1957 to be closer to Mr. Black’s work at the Ford Glass Plant. Betty worked at Life and Casualty and later at Third National Bank where she worked as a Key Punch Operator.
When they moved to Nashville, they moved their membership from Flewellyn Baptist Church and started attending Park Avenue Baptist Church where they were involved in Sunday School, Training Union, Visitation, and the Clothes Closet. She truly had a servant and caregiver heart. To this day you can walk around her home and find little pieces of paper with Bible verses that she wrote down as reminders of God’s promises.
Mrs. Betty and Mr. Jewell were blessed with three children, Michael, Melissa, and Terry. Family meant everything to them. They enjoyed taking vacations to Panama City, Gatlinburg, Lookout Mountain, camping on the farm, or playing tourist around Nashville. When Christmas time came around, Mrs. Betty’s house was filled with laughter and memories as both sides of the family would gather.
When her brother needed care and when her husband needed help, Mrs. Betty was there to care for them. Her caring spirit was passed down to her children and their spouses so when the time came for Mrs. Betty to need a little extra help later in life, they were right by her side.
One thing that was always true, Mrs. Betty was transparent, and you knew where you stood. She believed what was right was right, no matter what.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Jewell Mathis Black; son, Michael Dale Black, and brothers, Jerry Carter, Billy Carter, and Tommy Carter.
She is survived by her children, Melissa (David) Garris and Terry (Dottie) Black; grandchildren, Thomas Joseph “TJ” (Cherie) Black, Michelle (Matt) King, and Dana Harris; great-grandchildren, Ayden Black, Christian Black, Ethan Black, Blake (Alex) King, Ana King, Jeremiah Dunn, Lexi Beasley, and Gigi Harris; great- great-grandchildren, Brynlynn Dunn and Avielle Dunn; brother, Jeff (Sally) Carter; nieces and nephews, Gina (Ben) Dowell, Michelle (Chas) Edwards, Mark (Lacee) Carter; great niece and nephew, Harvey Carter and Warren Carter.
A life celebration will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 12:00 pm with Pastor Patrick Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with Terry Black, Jeff Carter, TJ Black, Matt King, Jeremiah Dunn, and Blake King serving as pallbearers.
