A 44-year-old Nashville man was fatally injured after he was struck by a train in the 1400 block of 3rd Avenue South.
Officers responded to the train tracks behind 1420 3rd Avenue South at 2:30 a.m. and found the man, Stephen Michael Gawiak, 44, of Nashville, deceased underneath the train.
The conductor reported seeing the man lying on the tracks about 15 feet prior to impact. He applied the brakes but was unable to stop.
