Man Arrested After Allegedly Shooting Toward South Precinct Officer

October 31, 2024 – John Carney, 66, is jailed this morning on $55,000 bond after allegedly shooting toward a South Precinct officer who was responding to a domestic dispute at 2:30 a.m. on Plus Park Boulevard. Officer Dylon Mercado, a two-year MNPD veteran, observed Carney chasing a woman yelling he was going to kill her.

As Officer Mercado approached the woman, he heard a gunshot. The woman confirmed Carney was armed.

Officer Mercado demanded Carney drop his weapon. He fled, throwing the 9mm handgun into a wooded area. The weapon was later recovered by an ATF canine.

He was taken into custody without incident and charged with domestic assault, aggravated assault, and aggravated assault on an officer.

Officer Mercado was not injured as a result of this morning’s gunfire.
