UPDATE: The investigation into Wednesday’s murder-suicide at Antioch High School reveals that 17-year-old Solomon Henderson fired ten shots from a 9mm pistol within 17 seconds of entering the cafeteria. Police recovered the pistol, which had nine rounds loaded, and a magazine with seven rounds was found on the cafeteria floor.
No firearms or related items were discovered during a search of Henderson’s home on Carefree Lane.
Detectives confirmed that Henderson’s mother brought him to school on Wednesday, not a bus as initially thought. Before entering the cafeteria, Henderson stopped in a nearby restroom and posted photos on social media.
Investigators have found two lengthy documents (51 and 288 pages) linked to Henderson on non-traditional websites. These documents and other evidence are being reviewed by homicide detectives, specialized investigators, and the FBI. Henderson was heavily influenced by harmful online content from unconventional sites. The FBI is assisting in examining these ideological influences.
The ATF is investigating the gun’s origin. It was purchased legally in Arizona in 2022 and had not been reported stolen. Efforts are ongoing to trace how Henderson acquired it.
UPDATE: Homicide Unit detectives and federal/state agencies are examining on-line writings and social media posts connected to 17-year-old Solomon Henderson as they work to establish the motive behind Henderson’s gunfire in Antioch High School’s cafeteria.
The investigation to this point has not established a connection between Henderson and the two shooting victims. It may be that they were struck by his random gunfire in the cafeteria.
The two school resource officers assigned to Antioch High School were in another part of the building when the gunfire started. They rushed to the cafeteria and arrived just after Henderson killed himself.
“On behalf of this entire police department, I extend our deep condolences to Antioch High students, parents, and staff,” Chief John Drake said. “Our officers and counselors will work to be part of the healing process in the days and weeks ahead.”
As to questions concerning any prior police interaction with Henderson, the MNPD will not be at liberty to address those as Tennessee law protects juvenile information in most law enforcement matters.
UPDATE – 5:30pm: Dr. Adrienne Battle issued the following statement following the shooting at Antioch High School on January 22, 2025.
MNPS Families:
Today, we mourn the heartbreaking loss of two Antioch High School students in a tragic shooting incident. One student took their own life and the life of a peer, leaving our entire MNPS community grieving alongside their families and loved ones. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this unimaginable loss.
We are grateful for the swift response of Antioch High School staff, the Nashville Police Department, and the Nashville Fire Department, who acted quickly to ensure no additional harm. This tragedy remains under investigation, and we are committed to understanding how to prevent such incidents in the future.
Antioch High School will be closed for the rest of the week to allow time for grieving. Counselors and support staff will be available at all schools starting tomorrow to assist students and staff in need.
Safety is our highest priority. While we have implemented a range of measures, including security cameras and weapon detection software, shatter-resistant film, and partnerships with law enforcement, we continue to evaluate and enhance our strategies to create safe learning environments for all students.
Our schools are places of learning, growth, and community, and we remain committed to supporting all MNPS families during this difficult time.
