November 10, 2022 – Violent Crimes Division detectives have charged Javanta Terrell, 31, with auto theft, gun possession by a convicted felon, and evading arrest after spotting him driving a carjacked Lexus SUV that was taken at gunpoint from its owner near the Bridge Building downtown on the night of November 4.

Detectives spotted the Lexus Tuesday evening and, with the assistance of an MNPD helicopter, followed it to an apartment complex at 11th Avenue North and Horton Avenue. Terrell got out. As detectives approached, he initially ducked behind another parked car and then began running. He was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. A loaded pistol was recovered at the vehicle Terrell initially hid behind.

Terrell was convicted of 2nd degree murder in 2007 and received a 20-year sentence for the 2005 death of a woman inside an apartment on 23rd Avenue North.
